The McKinney-Vento Act provides stability, equity, and critical supports for students experiencing homelessness—ensuring they have the opportunity to succeed in school and beyond. In the McKinney-Vento Act, a homeless individual lacks a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence.

Ensures immediate school enrollment—even without typical documents
Protects the right to attend the school of origin or local school
Provides transportation when needed
Guarantees equal access to educational services
Supports unaccompanied youth
Families sharing living space with others due to financial hardship.
People living in temporary or unconventional places like parks or campsites.
Runaway or "throwaway" youth living on the streets or in unsuitable conditions.
Pregnant teens or young mothers staying with friends or in shelters.
Families temporarily residing in motels or emergency shelters.
Children placed in transitional or emergency shelters by the state.
